Holehird Gardens

You may be wondering why we have devoted a whole page to Holehird Gardens. Well, it is quite simply a local jewel that has to be visited if you are in the area and have the remotest interest in plant, flowers or gardening.

Holehird Gardens

The gardens are maintained exclusively by volunteers which makes the sheer scale and quality of what is achieved quite stunning.

I blush to admit that until someone mentioned Holehird in the guest book I had driven past it on most weekends without much of a thought for the last 2 years. When we finally visited in May 2008 we were astonished to find that this place was within easy walking distance (1.8 miles) of Windermere Lodge.

Apart from the National Collections of Astilbe, Hydrangea and Polystichum (ferns to you and me) the gardens have amazing views of Windermere and the Coniston and Langdale Fells

Holehird Gardens

We visited in May and the azaleas were just finishing their ravishing annual show

Holehird Gardens

For us, Holehird will become a regular place to visit to watch how the garden changes with the seasons. We hope that visitors to Windermere Lodge will also get as much enjoyment from this hidden gem.

Admission and parking are free but donations are welcome (their suggested donation is £3 per visitor)

Dogs (except support dogs) are not allowed
